Hydraulic fracturing (of shale) can lead to contamination of groundwater supplies used for drinking and agriculture. Concerns: methane entering water supply, handling of drilling wastewater, and residue of toxic lubricants (e.g. benzene); drilling now taking place in more populated areas. Regulation: EPA said hydraulic fracturing harmless in 2004 > removed from Safe Drinking Water Act.
